How To Take Your Reference Photo

Getting the right photo is an essential part of the process. Your painting will be a representation of your photograph. The better the quality, the better the detail in the painting. Take a look at our reference photo examples here, and use the following guidelines to help you take the right kind of photograph for your portrait. Please provide several photographs from which to choose. When possible, we schedule a visit to come see the pet in person and help with the photo-shoot.

Light & Color

  1. Use natural light - take your photos outside in the sunlight if possible.
  2. Don't use a flash.
  3. Try to reduce sunglare, especially with black fur.

Composition

  1. Plan to stand about 3 feet away to get all of the head in the frame.
  2. Take your photo at the animal's eye-level, not 'on top of' or 'above' them.
  3. Shoot a 3/4 profile rather than a straight-on shot.
  4. Animal's mouth should be closed in at least one of the photos.
  5. Don't be concerned with your hands, or other visual information in the photo.

Format, Size & Resolution

Choose one method:

  1. Email a high-resolution digital file in jpeg format (camera at a high-quality setting).
  2. Email or mail a printout of a high-resolution scan from a photograph.
  3. Mail a photographic print. Make sure the animal's head is at least 3 inches tall. It will be returned with your finished painting.

When we receive your photos we will narrow the choice down to one or two. Sometimes you may have a certain look in mind for your portrait. You may have a photograph with the look you desire but the color, light or angle may not be ideal as a reference photo. Don't worry - we will work with you until we are able to find a photo that will satisfy the look you want and the reference photo we require. This sometimes takes a few tries to get right, but it is worth it in the end.

Once a photo is chosen, we crop the photo to set the composition within the square panel. Corey's style is to paint the bust alone (not other parts of the body).
